BEWARE OF "TAX RELIEF COMPANIES". You may have seen so-called "tax relief companies" that advertise on TV claiming that they can "settle your tax debts for pennies on the dollar". DON'T YOU BELIEVE THEM!!!! Many of these companies are in bankruptcy and/or are being sued by their customers and governmental agencies for consumer fraud and theft. Those companies and others have thousands of complaints filed against them with the Better Business Bureau because they took their client's money and didn't provide any or provided only a few of the services they promised. In fact, we've had a number of customers of these "tax relief companies" come to us for assistance after they were duped by these companies. Don't waste your time or money with them.
Below you will find a general discussion of the strategies The Brown Law Firm employs to help you with your tax issues.
1. Strategies for Handling Internal Revenue Service Tax Debt.
The only tax professionals allowed to practice before the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) are Certified Public Accountants, Enrolled Agents, or attorneys.
There are only four strategies for settling tax debt with the IRS.
A. Installment agreement: a monthly payment plan for paying off the IRS;
B. Partial payment installment agreement: a fairly new debt management program where you have a long term payment plan to pay off the IRS at a reduced dollar amount;
C. Offer in Compromise: a program where you can settle your tax debts for less than what you owe. This program requires making a lump sum or short term payment plan to pay off the IRS at a reduced dollar amount; and
D. Not currently collectible: a
program where the IRS voluntarily agrees not to collect on the
tax debt for a year or so.
2. Strategies for Handling State Tax Debt.
The Brown Law Firm handles state tax disputes with the Texas State Comptroller's office at all stages. This includes negotiations with the Comptroller's office and representation in connection with audits all the way through court proceedings for the determination of the tax liability, including representing clients in bankruptcy court in order to determine the client's tax liability.
3. Strategies for Handling Local Tax Debt.
The Brown Law Firm handles tax disputes with local taxing authorities at all stages. This includes negotiations with the County Appraisal District and representation before the Appraisal Review Board all the way through court proceedings for the determination of the tax liability, including representing clients in bankruptcy court in order to determine the client's tax liability.
